The LASIK lasers most often used are the:

VISX Star S4 IR (70% market share)

The VISX Star S4 IR laser commands an impressive 70% market share and is the most trusted laser among Refractive Surgeons (LASIK Surgeons). In other words, this laser is preferred and used by 70% of Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) in the United States. The VISX Star S4 IR laser provides:

The type of procedure that can deliver this level of precision is the Advanced CustomVue Technology. Advanced CustomVue Technology is the unique (and patented) combination of the WaveScan WaveFront System and the STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser. It’s no wonder that 70% of all Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) prefer and use this superior technology.

 

WaveLight Allegretto (18% market share)

Bausch and Lomb (6% market share)

The Bausch and Lomb laser is currently in third place behind both the VISX Star S4 IR laser and the WaveLight Allegretto laser. The Bausch and Lomb laser is preferred and used by 6% of Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) here in the United States. The Bausch and Lomb laser provides:

The Bausch and Lomb laser, like the WaveLight Allegretto laser, does not provide Fourier Algorithm, 3-D Eye Tracking or Iris Registration. Alcon Ladar Vision (5% market share)

The Alcon Ladar Vision laser holds a fourth place preference among Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) with a 5% market share. The Alcon Ladar Vision laser provides:

  • Custom Wavefront Technology in a limited range

 

The Alcon Ladar Vision laser, like the WaveLight Allegretto and the Bausch and Lomb laser does not provide Fourier Algorithm, 3-D Eye Tracking or Iris Registration. The Alcon Lader Vision laser system does not have a Wavefront-Analyzer to do a wavefront mapping of the optical system, and therefore cannot customize treatment for a specific eye or an individual patient.

 

Nidek EC 5000 (1% market share)

The Nidek EC 5000 laser comes in at fifth place among Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) with a United States market share of 1%. The Nidek EC 5000 does not offer Custom Wavefront Technology, Fourier Algorithm, 3-D Eye Tracking or Iris Registration. The Nidek EC 5000 laser system does not have a Wavefront-Analyzer to do a wavefront mapping of the optical system, and therefore cannot customize treatment for a specific eye or an individual patient.

 

You may be wondering if market share really matters. In our opinion it does. Market share accurately reflects preferences and laser use among Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) here in the United States. This means the Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) have already compared and evaluated the lasers, including the quality and consistency of outcomes following LASIK. Refractive Surgeons (LASIK surgeons) have already done the research for you!

 

Now let's take a look at the features and what that means to someone having LASIK. The features that affect outcomes, also referred to as results, is how well someone sees following LASIK:

 

Custom WaveScan Wavefront Technology

Custom Wavefront Technology enhances clarity, improves night vision, and the ability to see contrast. The Custom Wavefront Technology provides a new level of diagnostic information than has been previously available. The use of Custom Wavefront Technology makes every procedure truly personalized to each individual patient. A truly customized LASIK procedure requires the use of Custom WaveScan WaveFront technology. Custom WaveScan WaveFront technology creates an accurate and objective measurement of the entire optical system, including both higher and lower-order aberrations. These Custom WaveScan WaveFront measurements are 25 times more precise than standard measurements for glasses or contact lenses.

 

IMPORTANT: A Custom WaveScan WaveFront guided LASIK procedure is NOT the same as a wavefront-optimized LASIK treatment. A wavefront-optimized LASIK treatment is based on the eye's refraction (the same measurements used for a glasses or contact lens prescription) and K-readings (the same measurement used to determine base curve in a contact lens prescription). Wavefront-optimized treatments are commonly referred to as “standard”, “classic” or “traditional” LASIK because the wavefront-optimized treatments do NOT use custom technology.

 

Fourier Algorithm

Fourier Algorithm provides an inner reconstruction method that overcomes the limitations of traditional Zernike shapes. Using the Fourier Algorithm, a precise calculation of the thermal sensitive application of excimer laser pulses is generated to create a smooth, swift treatment. The purpose of the Fourier Algorithm is to eliminate all aberrations and reduce night glare and halos. Fourier Algorithm provides highly accurate, precise vision correction – delivering superior results.

 

3-D Active Eye Tracking

3-D Active Eye Tracking is the first FDA-approved tracker to monitor and track eye movements along the X, Y and Z axes. This means 3-D Active Eye Tracking follows any slight movements of the eye instantaneously and automatically, in all three dimensions, and re-positions the laser to ensure accuracy.

 

Iris Registration

Iris Registration applies a set of sophisticated algorithms to locate and identify hundreds of matching reference points for each iris; and then automatically checks the quality of the matches to prevent false matches. Iris Registration also records the center of the pupil relative to the outer boundary of the iris and compares it to under the laser readings – again to insure precision accuracy. Iris Registration provides a higher level of alignment accuracy and precision, providing confidence that the surgeon's treatment is in the correct location on the cornea.

 

Another important consideration are the results of FDA studies on patients who had LASIK using the VISX StarS4 CustomVue WaveScan Wavefront laser system. FDA studies show:

  • 96% of patients in the FDA study were satisfied with their vision following their CustomVue WaveScan Wavefront LASIK procedure.

  • 2/3 of all FDA study patients saw better at one year after their CustomVue WaveScan Wavefront LASIK procedure than they did before their LASIK procedure with glasses or contact lenses.

  • At their one year post-operative examination following CustomVue WaveScan Wavefront LASIK, 99% of FDA study patients had 20/20 vision or better; 75% of these patients had vision of 20/16 or better; and 23% of these study patients had 20/12 vision or better.

  • Four times as many FDA study patients were very satisfied with their night vision following their CustomVue WaveScan Wavefront LASIK than were satisfied with their night vision before their LASIK procedure.
