Alright Boise, it is that time of year again, Fourth of July! This is the time of year to celebrate our nation's independence. Many American's partake in this holiday by blowing things up. Ah the joys of fireworks, they really offer everything a good party needs: sound, light, and a little sparkle. Just like we discussed last year though, these little beauties can be very dangerous. There is a growing body of evidence that the use of computers, tablets and smart phones can adversely affect visual health. Results of current studies report that visual acuity and color vision among computer users decreases with significant statistical value when compared to non-computer users. Vision problems associated with computer use is correlated to age and duration of exposure; while color vision is correlated to age.

We are all aware of the importance eating healthy, regular exercise, annual physicals and twice-yearly dental cleaning, but what about eye exams? There's more to a comprehensive eye exam than just getting an updated glasses or contact lens prescription. A comprehensive eye exam evaluates the function and health of the eyes, and can even detect systemic conditions and disease before symptoms are noticed.

It is finally May, the weather is starting to warm up, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and we Idahoans are excited to be outdoors! May really is a wonderful time of year! It almost feels like a rejuvenating time after a winter that was trying for many and the rain showers (and spring cleaning) of spring.

We've all been there. You wake up in the morning to find that your eyes look a little red, they feel irritated as if there's something in your eye, lights seem a bit brighter than usual, and if you wear contact lenses they aren't as comfortable as usual.

March is here and with a new month brings on a new preventative health topic, Workplace eye wellness! All over the country companies are encouraging healthy behavior with their work force. More and more companies are supporting health fairs and encouraging their employees to undergo physicals. In certain cases incentives may be offered for healthy living, such as being a non-smoker or having healthy cholesterol levels. Improving work force health is a wonderful initiative, while initiating health incentives it is important to not forget about the eyes.
