It's official it is November. That means snow is on the mountains (soon to be streets) and it is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a serious systemic disease that has an impact on the entire body; it is also more common than people realize. The Center for Disease Control estimated that in 2015 30.3 million people in the United States had diabetes. That is almost ten percent of the population of the United States!

October is one of the most recognized awareness months in the United States. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This national initiative is designed to increase awareness, increase early diagnosis, provide support for breast cancer patients, and educate about breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and can occur at any age. It is also important to note that breast cancer can also affect men.

Back to school time is here! Where did the summer go? With all of the back to school preparations (school supplies, school clothes, etc.) did you remember to get your children in for a comprehensive eye examination? Children's eye examinations are so important because 80% of what we learn is visual and recent research indicates that certain types of refractive errors (myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia) can have an impact on literacy.

Happy Solar Eclipse Week Idaho! What an amazing week for Idaho, we get to experience a solar eclipse, which means one more excuse to get outside during a work day and enjoy the great outdoors. Not to over shadow the eclipse (hehehe) but this week is also Contact Lens Health Week!

Well Boise, can you believe it is August already? August in national Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. August is a perfect time of year for Children's Eye Health and Safety Month because it gets children's eyes ready for the next school year! Back to school season seems to be weighted towards getting new school supplies and school clothes when it needs to include making sure children can see their school work and are happy and healthy.

Alright Boise, it is that time of year again, Fourth of July! This is the time of year to celebrate our nation's independence. Many American's partake in this holiday by blowing things up. Ah the joys of fireworks, they really offer everything a good party needs: sound, light, and a little sparkle. Just like we discussed last year though, these little beauties can be very dangerous. So hold onto your popsicle because here comes a review!

There is a growing body of evidence that the use of computers, tablets and smart phones can adversely affect visual health. Results of current studies report that visual acuity and color vision among computer users decreases with significant statistical value when compared to non-computer users. Vision problems associated with computer use is correlated to age and duration of exposure; while color vision is correlated to age.
